We tell a little bit about class members in About Us. You can see the course Handouts, Resources, Program and some Site info. The Eugene Mennonite Church sits on West 18th Street near the intersection of Bailey Hill. The church members are peace activists, non-conformists, and skeptics of authority and power. From their strong commitment to helping their community, they provide discounted rent to the Wellsprings Friends School which uses their building throughout the week.
Wellsprings, “the little school with a big heart”, nurtures students who have not fit into the traditional school regimen. The school teaches 60 students from grades 9 through 12 and it has a waiting list. The learning atmosphere is highly individualized and self-directed, with flexible class structure. Students work with the teachers to define the curriculum. Classes range from music and language to math and science, with music and art as a major focus of the education. There are seven full time faculty plus several part time teachers and an active volunteer board. The teachers are invested in the students beyond classroom instruction and often take a parental role.
The clients are wondering how best to use a long skinny site with a small frontage and how to express the identity of church and school without the intimidating aspect of institutions. The program includes spaces for community, administration, learning and support.
